New Teacher Orientation Program

What are the benefits of the program?

The Virginia Adult Learning Resource Center's year-round orientation program is especially for new adult education and ESOL teachers. The goal is to make sure that new teachers get the help they need when and where they need it. Through the program, new teachers receive:

• An immediate welcome to Virginia's adult education/ESOL system
• A free Starter Kit by mail
• Subscription to Progress newsletter and VAILL mailing list
• A regional orientation to adult education/ESOL principles and practice
• A one-year subscription to a special email list (listserv)
• Resources and staff development information via the email list - targeted to their specific needs
• Access to Resource Center new teacher training at times and locations to meet their needs,
• The experience of being part of a "cohort" of new teachers, and
• An optional end-of-year follow-up sharing session.

Who is eligible?

New Adult Education and ESOL teachers, hired since September 1, 2003. To participate, teachers must work in Virginia and have an email address that they can use on a regular basis. (This program is not designed to provide the training required for new volunteer literacy tutors. Literacy organizations should contact Victoire Gerkens Sanborn at the Literacy Support Center for assistance.)

How do I register?

Only program managers/instructional specialists, or their designees, can use the online form to register new teachers for this program. Use the forms below to register:

After the registration is submitted, the teacher will receive a welcome email message.
