Buying a Computer

  • Dave's Guide to Buying a Home Computer: A set of documents from the course "Introduction to Home Computing." Topics include the basics of using a computer in the home or office, the history of computing, using word processing, and what makes the Internet tick.
  • Q & A on Buying a Computer: Graeme Bennett answers questions to various computer questions here which include: PC or MAC? IS the computer powerful enough? Will it become obsolete soon? and Are the components the best choices?

Internet Service Providers

  • Online Connection: Features comparisons of the major commercial national Internet service providers and online serices. You can even go to a service's profile, download its software, and try it out.
  • Richmond Internet Yellow Pages: Searchable database of central Virginia companies and organizations on the Internet. "Keyword Search" will allow you to find a list of Internet service providers in the Richmond area.
  • The List : The Definitive ISP Buyer's Guide: Allows you to find a provider that offers the access speed and computer services that satisfy your needs and budget. Searching by area code and country code is available.

Search Engines

  • CUI W3 Search Engines: Collection of some of the most useful search engines available on the World Wide Web. Links to news, documentation, online catalogs, domain names, and tools for information access are included.
  • Search Engine Watch: Includes Webmaster's guide to search engines, search engine facts and fun, search engine status reports, search engine resources, and a search engine report newsletter.
  • Sink or Swim: Internet Search Tools and Techniques: Course designed to help Internet users become familiar with search tools and develop effective search techniques.

Search Engines

  • Answer Geek's Guide to the Internet: For those just getting started online who may need help getting connected, finding your way around, and using the resources in the online world. You will also find information on protecting your privacy and your kids once you get online.
  • Community Technology Centers' Network: A network of more than 250 community technology centers where people get access to computers and computer related technology. Members, Member Services, Publications, and the Getting Started Manual are sections within the site.
  • Internet Relay Chart (IRC) Help Guide: Over 800 helpful files including FAQ's, primers, guides, downloadable clients and scripts, server lists, etc.
  • PC Webopedia: Online encyclopedia and search engine dedicated to computer technology. You can enter a search terms or browse the categories like communications, graphics, hardware, Internet and online services, etc.
  • Smart Computing in Plain English: Pick an article type or category, search the site, read hardware reviews, or find definitions for computer terms here.
  • Understanding and Using the Internet : A Beginner's Guide: This is an outstanding web site with hyperlinks to HTML Guides, Online Tools and Resources, Web Page Development Software, Web Site Style and Design, Announcing Your Web Page.

Building a Website

  • Mary's Tips on Designing Web Sites: Special tips for print-oriented writers and artists as well as tips for the beginner. Table of Contents includes sections such as Java/Javascript, dynamic HTML, frames, tables, multimedia, and stylesheets.
  • Philip and Alex's Guide to Web Publishing: Includes sections on HTML, adding images to a website, publicizing a site, user training, etc. All of the information comes from Philip Greenspun's book of the same title.
  • Web Development Resources: Topics include essentials, graphics, HTML information, plugins, and site mandagement.

Web Delivered Instruction for Adults

  • Learn the Net: An Internet guide and tutorial in English, French, Dutch, Italian, and Spanish - just choose a language. Great for ESL purposes!
  • Learning Resources: Online literacy site developed by Western/Pacific Literacy Network and the CNN San Francisco bureau. Modules include the full text of each story and interactive activities to test comprehension.
  • The Nine Planets: A site full of information on the nine planets and the solar system.
  • Our Adult English Class in Hawaii: There are English lessons, a tour of Hawaii, newspapers, computers, and links to student homepages. Visit the writing lab if you want to see some of our work and the other things we do. You can also visit our teacher's office (homepage) and a teacher's lounge too.
  • Science and Technology: Special Collection: This special collection will allow instructors to develop and incorporate into their teaching and learning processes a series of inquiry-based activities in the context of science and technology. A second audience will be adult learners and their families: a special section will target scientific resources for families and family literacy programs.

Netiquette

  • Netiquette Guidelines: Provides a minimum set of guidelines for Network Etiquette which organizations may take and adapt for their own use.
  • Communication Briefings: What you should and shouldn't say when you send those e-mail messages.
