Government  Module Introduction and Project Ideas

This government curriculum has been designed to increase learners’ awareness of how to participate more actively and independently in their community, of their rights, and of representative government.  While government is touched upon in many adult ESOL civics texts, this curriculum seeks to expand upon information and activities that are commonly provided and to help learners personalize their knowledge.

To further personalize the learning experience, the instructor is encouraged to guide the learners in designing and implementing an appropriate final project. While the instructor serves as an advisor and facilitator, learners can decide upon an area of government which they would like to explore further and create a project that allows them to do so.

Below are some suggestions for final projects on government issues.  These are only suggestions; the learners can implement other ideas of their choosing if the instructor feels they are suited to the topic area.

Organize a trip to a county, state or federal government office, police department or court.  Learners could generate a list of questions for speakers in advance.

Evening classes could invite a representative from a government office, police department or court to speak with them.  Learners could generate a list of questions for speakers in advance.

Write a school newspaper with articles about political and/or rights issues that are of interest to learners and/or the school’s community.
