Health Module Introduction and Project Ideas
This health awareness curriculum has been designed to increase learners'
knowledge about how to access care and be a self-advocating consumer of health
care services in the United States. While health issues are touched upon in many
adult ESOL texts, this curriculum seeks to expand upon information and
activities that are commonly provided and help learners personalize and apply
their knowledge.
To further
personalize the learning experience, the instructor is encouraged to guide the
learners in designing and implementing an appropriate final project. While the
instructor serves as an advisor and facilitator, learners can decide upon an
area of health which they would like to explore further and create a project
that allows them to do so.
Below are
some suggestions for final projects on health-related issues. These are only
suggestions; the learners can implement other ideas of their choosing if the
instructor feels they are suited to the topic area.
Organize a health fair in which local health care providers come to the school,
provide information and free health screenings to students.
Create a presentation for other classes on prevention of a form of illness such
as HIV, diabetes or hypertension.
Create a brochure for other students on where and how to access low-cost health
care in the community.
Select and invite a health care speaker to present to the class. Prepare
questions in advance.
