ABOUT LVA - RV

Literacy Volunteers of America - Roanoke Valley (LVA-RV) is a non-profit volunteer organization whose primary function is to help adult learners improve their reading, writing and English-speaking skills. All tutoring is free and confidential to adults in the Virginia counties of Roanoke, Botetourt, and Craig, and the cities of Roanoke and Salem.

Each adult learner is matched with an LVA trained, volunteer tutor. The pair is encouraged to meet two hours per week. Together they decide on the location and time of their meetings. The local library is the most common public place used for tutoring sessions.

Learner goals are self-generated. One person might want to help their children with schoolwork; another might want to understand job-related literature; yet another might want to read the Bible. An ESOL learner might want to acquire a basic life skills vocabulary or work toward successfully completing their US citizenship exams.

Emphasis is placed on authentic instructional materials which have meaning in the learner's life. A wide range of occupational, consumer, legal and family literacy resources are available at the LVA-RV office for tutors to use with their learners.

Our tutors are volunteers, trained to tutor either Basic Literacy or English-for-Speakers-of-Other-Languages. Tutor training workshops are held on an on-going basis throughout the year. No prior teaching experience or knowledge of a foreign language is required.
