Every summer, the Virginia Department of Education offers several opportunities for adult educators to gather and learn from each other. This year's Summer Institutes, scattered across Virginia, will cover a range of topics including the inquiry process introduced in GED as Project, reading, and English literacy.
Inquiry Process Institute
Newport News, VA
ABE/GED teachers & tutors
Come meet the latest addition to the GED as Project family - Volume 5: Social Studies and Science. Take part in engaging, hands-on workshops with the content consultants. Visit with the field testers and learn about their experiences using the inquiry process. Participants will learn how to incorporate the inquiry process into their own classrooms and how to build Inquiry Activities tailored to a class' particular needs and interests. Best of all, GED as Project doesn't require the purchase of new materials.
Reading Institute
Radford, VA
Teachers & tutors of beginning & intermediate level readers (NRS levels 1, 2, 3, or 4)
Join teachers and tutors from all over the state who recognize the importance of working with beginning and intermediate adult readers. Participants will engage in lively "book clubs" on the first morning, and then move into in-depth workshops that draw from research in the areas of alphabetics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Two tracks are available, but participants must choose one: Beginning Readers (NRS Reading Levels 1-2) or Intermediate Readers (Levels 3-4). This will be an intensive, two-day session, and participants are asked to commit to being present for the entire institute.
