Every summer, the Virginia Department of Education offers several opportunities for adult educators to gather and learn from each other. This year's summer institutes, scattered across Virginia, will cover a range of topics. Two of them will focus on ESOL: the Shenandoah ESOL institute on workplace ESOL and the Tidewater ESOL institute on ESOL for new practitioners. The Virginia Institute for Lifelong Learning (VAILL) returns this year with a broad focus on GED and adult basic education.
Virginia Institute for Lifelong Learning (VAILL)
Radford, VA
Program Managers, Teachers, Tutors
Plan now to attend “RACE to the GED” - Virginia Institute for Lifelong Learning (VAILL) 2005 to be held on the campus of Radford University, July 11-13. The program is packed with learning opportunities for YOU. No matter what your role - program administrator, teacher, aide, volunteer, staff - there is something for everyone. The agenda offers many in-depth workshops on very current topics. The planning committee has worked to provide strands throughout the schedule so you can find workshops that not only focus on a particular topic but also what you need to know about that topic based on your role in your program. Seating in each workshop will be limited to 30. This will allow our presenters to prepare adequate materials for participants. We will be offering some sessions twice to accommodate the most participants.
ESOL Summer Institute - Shenandoah
Harrisonburg, VA

All participants should select one of these stands when registering. A packet of pre-institute readings will be mailed to participants according to the strand chosen. Because time will be limited, the institute will be jam-packed with content, instructional activities, and special events. You will be part of a cohort that will explore in-depth the issues for your selected strand and you will leave the Institute refreshed and renewed in spirit with binders full of handouts, and information to additional resources as well as copies of either the new Practitioner Toolkit: Working with Adult English Language Learners by NCFL and NCLE or T.E.S.O.L.'s Effective Practices in Workplace Language Training: Guidelines for Providers of Workplace English Language Training.
