Project Objectives:

  • To connect adults in the Greater Richmond Metropolitan area to the skills they need for employment by providing state-of-the-art computer equipment and teacher training.
  • To help adult basic skills programs and related agencies develop easy-to-access web-sites as an integral part of a Richmond area on-line "one stop" system for employers, employees, job seekers and education and training providers.
  • To make resources easily accessible to adult education and literacy teachers nationwide through the Workforce Education Learning Activities Bank (LAB) on the World Wide Web.
  • To integrate technology in adult education and literacy through professional development efforts, including Technology Camp 2000 and the e-learning Resource Center.

A teacher uses the new Verizon Workforce Skills Computer Lab to instruct students in the use of PowerPoint. The Verizon Lab is in the Adult Career Development Center located in Richmond.
The generosity of the Verizon Corporation made it possible to provide the Adult Career Development Center with new computers and state-ofthe-art presentation equipment.

"American businesses are estimated to lose over $60 billion in productivity each year due to employees lack of basic skills."

As a record of Virginia Commonwealth University's work on the Verizon Links Virginia for Literacy project, an electronic Case Study has been created. The case, “Creating a Model Technology Site for Adult Education and Literacy Programs” documents the process of how Virginia Commonwealth University collaborated with the Adult Career Development Center, to create a model site for technology use in adult education and literacy programs. Some of the issues examined in the case include how technology will meet the educational and programmatic needs of the Center. Questions regarding teacher training in technology, support and maintenance of the new technologies implemented in the school, and the role of the Internet in today's economy are also presented throughout the case.
